Green Cleaning DFW serves many homes in businesses in the Rockwall area. We’ve posted many tips on cleaning, including Spring Cleaning tips and Cleaning Your Home Quickly . But, one of the most common occurrences we come across as we clean homes is hard water stains.
Hard water is common, especially in areas like Fate and Royse City. Hard water has a high mineral content and is formed when water percolates through deposits of calcium and magnesium-containing minerals such as limestone, chalk and dolomite.
It is estimated that hard water effects more than 85% of the country. Although hard water is not thought to be a harm to human health, it does produce some unwanted issues in the home.
- Soap scum in sinks and bathtubs
- Bathtub rings
- Spots on dishes or shower doors
- Reduced foaming and cleaning abilities of soaps and detergents
- Dingy and yellowed clothes with soapy residues that require extra rinsing to remove
- Clogged pipes from buildup of minerals
- Increased water heating costs from buildup of minerals, reducing efficiency of water heaters
- Possible skin infections from bacteria trapped in pores underneath soap scum
How to Clean Hard Water Stains
Hard water stains can be difficult to clean and remove from your bathtub, sink or toilet. A good way to clean hard water stains is with a vinegar solution. Prepare a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar and place in a spray bottle. Be sure to clean your bottle thoroughly before putting your cleaning mixture in.
Allow vinegar time to soak in on the stains. If you allow hard water stains to be soaked in by vinegar, it will break down the mineral deposits that are holding the scum in place. After 5-10 minuets, you can wipe the vinegar off or use a brush for tougher stains.
In your bathtub or shower, you can wipe down any remaining water after using the shower or bathtub. This will take the mop up the material before the mineral deposits have the opportunity to set up and leave spots.
